In one of those weird Washington political maneuvers, it seems that the political hawks from both parties, are realizing that our national security is at risk due to climate changes. Senator Kerry from the Democrats and former Senator John Warner, a former chairman of the Armed Services Committee, have joined forces to lobby on strong climate legislation. The driving force of support behind these two men is the Pentagon. It seems that a Pentagon think tank, CNA, has raised the alarm that global warming is threatening our national security. The Pentagon is worried that rising temperatures and seas will impair its ability to defend our country. CNA has also highlighted potential conflicts arising from a depletion of resources around the world. Resources like water, viable agricultural lands, and oil will cause major upheavals around the globe. These upheavals could cause the U.S. military to be called upon to fight and defend multiple fronts over these resources. Potential mass migrations of people around the globe seeking the basic necessities of food and water could trigger multiple military conflicts. The Pentagon seems to have become an advocate for climate change legislation. Republicans and Democrats have their political interests to protect, and have not been proponents to moving climate change legislation forward. Time is running out, and Washington cannot find a middle ground to cooperate on climate change legislation. Having the Pentagon enter the fray may be the catalyst to push both conservatives, and liberals to quickly do something about climate change legislation. Having the military industrial complex on the side of climate change legislation is most welcomed. Who would have thought that the military could become the major cheerleader, to having Washington finally do something about the environment?
