Sex, Politics, and Religion are the three main conversations that Emily Post says we should not discuss with people we do not know. But, I cannot think of three topics that stimulate conversation more than these, with the exception of an all male sports talk show. And these are topics that are discussed every day, just turn on the boob tube or talk radio. Sex, politics, and religion are all big business. Now we have the Vatican entering the fray over Nature (Green) becoming the next new religion for this millennium. The cause for this Vatican concern – Avatar, the movie.
The Vatican criticizes this film as, and I quote, “a wink towards the pseudo-doctrines which have made ecology the religion of the millennium . . . Nature is no longer a creation to defend, but a divinity to worship.”… “a new pantheism tinged with neo-paganism, which would see the source of man’s salvation in nature alone, understood in purely naturalistic terms”. The Vatican, and conservative commentary is that the Greenies have become too zealous in their mantra and faith. The Greenies are those radicals that criticize you for the car you drive, the vacations you take, the food that you eat, all threatening the down fall of man because he has not taken nature into account. Personally, I think the scientific evidence has laid the religious part of the threat man has made to his existence quite clear. We’re not zealots trying to resort to gaiam worship, we’re practical people that are saying look, we’ve got too much CO2 in the air, unclean water, too many people, destroying habitats, and all of this points to industrialized man. Climate change is here, and its not from a divine being. We did it. We need to fix it. We need to push the boundaries to get people and governments to change their behavior towards saving the environment. If the Greenies resort to the tactics all of the major religions have used in the past and present, well then I’m for it to get Nature fixed.
